Twine's Activities

Twine uses art, craft and storytelling as a vehicle for social change and building connections between nature and humanity.

We focus our relationship to art and artists in the following three ways:

Content: Twine works to support artists and help to promote and create art that addresses environmental and social justice issues through it’s conceptual content.

Materials: Twine encourages environmentally responsible relationships between artists, craftspeople and their sources of materials. Twine particularly encourages work with natural materials such as natural dyes and fibers.

Process and Lifestyles: The process of artmaking can be as important as the finished piece. The way we go about making art, and the way in which we live, are intertwined. Artists are cultural producers. Artists can affect the communities they live in profoundly, and we would like to equip them with knowledge and skills in environmental and social justice issues so that they might influence others they effect.

Twine strives to promote art, ecology, and social justice by creating opportunities for ethical enterprises and integrated learning.

Integrated Learning

Celebration of life as learning allows pathways for positive social change. We create and promote resources, networks and activities that stir up imagination, curiousity, creativity and empowerment

  1. Storytelling and dialogue: publications, stories, zines, recipes, how-tos and more: we create resources that can promote concepts of art, ecology and social justice through real life stories, made up stories, conversations and communication based activities.
  2. Skill sharing and exchange networks: workshops, group activities, service learning etc. We seek to share our own skills, document the skills of others who would like to share their skills, and be part of learning other skills in order to pass them on.
  3. Exhibitions, screenings and events: Twine uses special events to promote art, ecology and social justice whenever we can.
  1. Media Arts: We are developing a media arts component. We hope that through video and sound recording skills Twine can work to elevate the voices of artists, artisans and farmers around the world. Through creating media we aim to promote greater awareness of globally interconnected issues and build connections to nature and humanity among diverse communities.

Twine believes that all human beings have valuable stories to tell and to hear. Twine uses media like videos, zines, books and publications to share stories about ecological, and social justice issues that affect our livelihoods, each other, and the earth.

Ethical enterprises

Twine, NFP believes that all people have the right to an ecologically healthy livelihood and we work to create and support networks and services that can serve small scale artists, artisans and farmers.

  1. Fair Trade Wholesaling, Consulting and Marketing: free and low cost assistance for artists and artisans in need. Twine represents small producers at craft fairs and attempts to connect them to long term fair marketplaces. We offer consultancy services to teachers, business people, and not for profit organisations and others who have interests in cross cultural exchange, fair trade, nature based crafts and skills for increased sustainable living.
  2. The Twine Line: We are developing a line of Twine products that will serve as collaborative support for under-recognized farmers and craftspeople through design that supports nature and human connections.
  1. Building sustainable livelihoods project network: sharing and exchanging craft and farming skills with others through workshops and more.
